Here at White Orthodontics, we work to perfect the smiles of our patients in the St. Louis surrounding communities. Whether you are visiting our O’Fallon, MO or Florissant, MO offices for your braces orthodontic treatment, here is what you need to know. Cleaning your teeth while having braces is crucial. While we know that braces often create an obstacle for cleaning, they also create additional places for plaque and food to build up. In order to keep your teeth and gums healthy while wearing braces, you must make an effort to properly brush and floss on a regular basis.

Brushing With Braces

Whether you or your children’s braces were completed at our O’Fallon or Florissant, MO offices, the braces care treatment is exactly the same. We recommend following these steps to properly brush your teeth with braces:

  1. Rinse your mouth with water.
  2. Obtain either an electric toothbrush or a soft-medium bristle toothbrush, add your desired toothpaste.
  3. Brush teeth for a total of 2 minutes.
  4. Make sure your brush is able to get above, below and in-between each braces bracket and braces wires.
  5. Rinse your mouth with water.
  6. Smile wide!

Flossing With Braces

While flossing with braces can be quite tricky, it is highly recommended. Your braces create extra places in your mouth for plaque and food to constantly build up. In order to prevent health risks, like gum disease, you must clear out whatever is in there! Follow the steps below to floss correctly with braces:

  1. Using waxed floss, make sure to floss at least once a day. (We recommend flossing before you brush your teeth).
  2. Thread the floss in-between your wire, bracket and tooth to thoroughly clean.
  3. Be sure to be gentle while flossing so that the wire or a bracket does not get caught on the floss.
  4. Repeat flossing motion for each individual tooth.
  5. Rinse your mouth with water.

Risks of Not Cleaning

Not cleaning your teeth regularly while wearing braces may seem like the easier way out - but can lead to many health risks. Avoid the risks below and treat your teeth with the care they need!

  • Gum Disease
  • Cavities
  • Plaque Build-Up Staining Teeth
