Foods To Eat With Braces

There are foods that your orthodontist will tell you to avoid and eliminate because they can damage your braces, so you may find yourself wondering, “what can I eat?” At White Orthodontics, we recommend soft foods that are more gentle on your braces, but we also want to make sure that you don’t forget about good nutrition while you are wearing braces.

You’ll want to make sure you are getting your daily dose of protein, fiber, calcium, and iron because you want to keep your enamel healthy since your braces are cemented to the enamel on your teeth.

Foods to Eat

  • Soft fruits such as grapefruit, oranges, nectarines, kiwi
  • Steamed vegetables and greens that are rich in calcium such as broccoli, kale, and okra
  • Dairy products that are rich in calcium, including milk, cheese, yogurt
  • Soft meats such as chicken, turkey, burger, lunch meat, seafood
  • Soft grains including cooked pasta and rice
  • Soft bread, tortillas, biscuits, muffins
  • Eggs
  • Legumes including beans and peas

There are other foods that are fine to eat with braces, but you’ll want to cut them into small pieces to avoid damage, including raw vegetables and fruits, meat, harder bread, and pizza.

Food to Eliminate

It only takes one bite of the wrong food to damage your braces, so these foods should be completely eliminated from your diet:

  • Hard candy can ruin the brackets or wires, and the sugar is also bad for your teeth
  • Sticky foods such as gum, caramel, peanut butter, and maple syrup
  • Ice, the biggest culprit to braces

Foods To Avoid With Braces

There are some foods that are not totally off limits, but you should try to avoid them or be very careful eating them. They include pizza crust, nuts, and raw carrots, and tough meats such as bacon and beef jerky.

And finally, while not food, many people chew on things such as pens, their fingernails, and toothpicks. Try to break these habits, so they don’t wreak havoc on your braces.
