At White Orthodontics, one of our fastest growing groups of patients are adults. Today, there are discrete options for adults to straighten their teeth and achieve the beautiful smile they’ve always dreamed of. Our orthodontists and staff work with our adult patients to customize their treatment to their specific needs and ensure they are comfortable with their orthodontic appliances. Many adult patients are worried about the length of treatment time and continually ask how long their treatment will take. The easy answer is, it differs from patient to patient.

Length of Treatment

For all orthodontic patients, there are four main factors that go into how long treatment will last, these include: age, complexity of the orthodontic issue, type of braces, and compliance. Typically, adult patients with braces will have a slightly longer treatment time compared to children. This is because it's easier to move teeth and bones when the mouth and jaw structures are not formed in place. Formation of these structures usually occurs in a patient’s late teen years or early twenties. However, this does not mean that an adult patient will have an extremely long treatment time.

The complexity of the patient's mouth, teeth, and bite will also come into play. Some adult patients may have mild orthodontic issues meaning their treatment time could be quite short. Additionally, the type of braces used and the compliance to treatment are both very important. For example, if a patient chooses Invisalign, they must wear their clear aligners for at least 22 hours per day. If they don’t their treatment will not go to plan and their teeth will not shift to the desired position. Ultimately, each case is different and the exact length of treatment cannot be known prior to seeing the orthodontist and having an official exam.
