Invisalign remains to be one of the most popular options on the market right now. There are many factors as to why patients choose Invisalign; the most popular being that you can eat whatever you want and have braces that are invisible. But many patients wonder how long it takes for Invisalign to straighten teeth. Does it take longer than wearing traditional metal braces? At White Orthodontics, our doctors and staff provide customizable treatments that fit a patient’s lifestyle. We can help decide what is best for you. If you’re interested in getting Invisalign, learn how it works and what to expect.

Length of Invisalign Treatment

In general, treatment can take around 1 to 2 years, but it differs from person to person. For some people, they can start noticing a difference in just 2 to 3 months. For others, it can take at least 6 months before they see improvement. However, there are different factors to consider when considering how long it will take to straighten teeth with Invisalign.

Factors That Affect Invisalign Treatment Length

  • The Severity of Your Problem- Everyone’s mouth is unique and different; depending on what type of bite you have and how crowded your teeth are, your Invisalign treatment length could be different than others. Mild spacing/crowding can be fixed in a year or less, while severe cases could take much longer.
  • Dental History- Before you start any orthodontic treatment, your orthodontist will want to know if your dental history. This can include needing to know if you’ve had any tooth extractions done or if you have a history of dental disease. Your orthodontist may also recommend getting dental work done before or during orthodontic treatment, which could delay your progress.
  • Age- Young patients (children and teens) tend to get results faster than adults because their jaws are still growing, making it easier to shift their teeth and bite.
  • How Disciplined You Are- The aligners must be worn for at least 22 hours a day for them to be effective. If you don’t wear them long enough, or if you lose a tray, it can delay the treatment plan.
  • Accidents/Emergencies- If the trays break or if you lose an Invisalign tray, this can mean having to go back and adjust your treatment plan accordingly. Also, if you do happen to get into an accident where your oral health is compromised (such as chipping, cracking, or losing your teeth), dental work will need to be done.
