Surviving the Holidays with Braces

At White Orthodontics, we believe everyone deserves a healthy smile, and our mission is to help patients of all ages in O'Fallon, Florissant, and the surrounding areas achieve one. Our orthodontists work closely with patients to create deeply personalized treatment plans, and we offer a wide range of orthodontic treatment options to make treatment fit into any patient's lifestyle. However, there are certain things you'll need to adjust to if you're getting treatment with braces, and one of them is altering your diet – especially around the holidays.

Holiday Food Do's and Don'ts with Braces

While wearing braces, you'll need to make some changes to your diet, mostly in the form of avoiding certain foods. That's because foods that are overly hard, crunchy, sticky, gooey, or packed with sugar pose a risk of damaging your braces or your teeth. Hard, crunchy foods can break off brackets, sticky foods can get stuck underneath the archwire and cause damage, and sugary foods contribute to and accelerate dental decay, which you're already more vulnerable to during orthodontic treatment.

Unfortunately, this job gets even trickier during the holidays. Many of our favorite holiday and treats fall into these categories, so if you're celebrating the holidays with braces this year make sure to avoid foods like these:

  • Candy canes
  • Peanut brittle
  • Taffy
  • Pecan pie
  • Jelly beans
  • Gingerbread cookies or other hard cookies
  • Any and all nuts
  • Popcorn
  • Caramel apples

However, that doesn't mean you have to turn yourself into an acetic during the holidays. There are plenty of holiday foods that are safe for braces, so feel free to indulge in foods like these:

  • Ice cream
  • Pumpkin pie
  • Gooey brownies that don't have nuts
  • Peanut butter cups
  • Dinner rolls
  • Stuffing
  • Turkey & ham that's been taken off the bone
  • Mashed potatoes
  • Custard
  • Pudding
