What is the Best Way to Floss With Braces?

What is the Best Way to Floss With Braces?
Posted on 10/12/2021

The hardest part of having braces is flossing. When getting braces, the responsibility to care for them is high. Because braces are stuck on your teeth (with brackets and wires), it can be harder to floss certain places in your mouth- increasing the risk for cavities and tooth decay. However, at White Orthodontics, we have tips that can help you! Our doctors and staff strive to educate all of our patients on what to do when they’re not in the office, and give them the best resources possible! If you have braces and are struggling to floss, here are some of the best ways to floss.

Why Floss?

The American Dental Association recommends flossing because cleaning between teeth removes plaque (which leads to cavities or gum disease) where a toothbrush can’t reach. With braces, the risk for plaque buildup, cavities, and gum disease increases. And while it can be hard to floss with braces, there are specific tools that can help you.

  • Floss Threader- You might think this is just a normal floss thread, but it’s different! It works like a needle and thread; the floss threader is the needle and the floss is the thread. First, pass the floss through the floss threader and then thread it beneath the wire. It can be hard to use it at first, but it does make it easier to get beneath the wires.
  • Superfloss- It is floss that has one stiff end. You simply take the stiff end of the floss, and guide it beneath your wire, allowing it to reach between your teeth. It is easy to use and can be found at any drugstore!
  • Platypus Orthodontic Flosser- It is a specific type of floss that is arched and works more like a plastic pick. There is no threading required; instead, the narrow side of the flosser is designed to fit behind the wire. While it is a faster, more convenient option, platypus flossers can be harder to find. However, you can easily find them online on Amazon and other sites.
  • Harp Orthodontic Flosser- The hard orthodontic flosser is like the platypus flosser, but is more arched and has a longer handle. It works by arching underneath the wire to get in-between the teeth. It is also reusable! Unfortunately, they are hard to find in the drugstore, so buy them on Amazon or other online websites.
  • Waterpik- It is a “water” flosser device that delivers a stream of pressurized pulsating water between your teeth, along the gum line, and around your braces. You can find them easily at any drugstore or supermarket! It is also a great option if you don’t want to use disposable plastic like other flossers.

Depending on what you like and what works for you, there are many different options to choose from! Overall, there is no “best” way to floss- just as long as you floss in general, it will still protect your teeth and gums.
